Chennai’s Street Food Gets a Nutritious Makeover with a Millet Twist

Chennai, renowned for its vibrant street food culture, is experiencing a healthy transformation, thanks to a small but innovative eatery in Adyar. This humble roadside joint is reinventing traditional South Indian street food by replacing refined grains with nutrient-packed millets, offering a wholesome and delicious alternative for health-conscious food lovers. Once a staple in Indian households, millets have made a strong comeback due to their high fiber, protein, and essential mineral content. With increasing awareness of their health benefits, millets are being embraced in both restaurants and home kitchens. This Adyar eatery takes it a step further by crafting millet-based versions of popular street food dishes, ensuring that taste and health go hand in hand. From crispy millet dosas to fluffy millet idlis, each dish retains the authentic flavors of Chennai’s beloved street food while enhancing its nutritional value. Millet Cultivation: A Path to Sustainable Farming and Healthier Communities!!!

Farmers in Karnataka are being urged to embrace millet cultivation as a sustainable and profitable alternative to traditional crops.  Agricultural experts and policymakers emphasize that millets are not only climate-resilient but also essential for improving public health and addressing malnutrition. These nutrient-dense grains thrive in arid and semi-arid conditions, requiring minimal water, making them ideal for regions prone to drought and erratic rainfall. Millets, including ragi, jowar, and bajra, are rich in dietary fiber, iron, calcium, and protein, earning them the status of a superfood in modern diets. By incorporating millets into crop rotations, farmers can diversify their produce, improve soil health, and reduce dependency on water-intensive crops like paddy. This transition ensures a more stable income, especially as demand for millets rises in urban and global markets. The government is actively promoting millet cultivation through subsidies, training programs,...

Borra Srinivas Rao's Manyam Grains: Empowering Farmers and Reviving Millet Production

Borra Srinivas Rao, the founder of   Manyam Grains , has successfully transformed the millet industry by sourcing grains directly from tribal farmers. Located near Visakhapatnam, Manyam’s processing plant handles and markets nine varieties of millets. The company’s efforts have resulted in a 30% increase in farmer incomes, liberating them from the grip of exploitative middlemen. But why would a mechanical engineer choose to process millets? Srinivas, 38, explains, “After completing my engineering degree, I joined BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), but I found the work monotonous and stressful. A few friends suggested I pursue rural management, so I enrolled at XIMB (Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar). It was there that I became deeply moved by articles on the agrarian crisis, particularly the issue of farmer suicides.” Millets are traditionally cultivated in the hilly tribal regions of  Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand , and Srinivas was drawn...

TCI and ICRISAT Discuss How Millets Can Strengthen India's Food Security Network

Experts at a debate on "Promoting Millets in the Public Distribution System" in India, organized by ICRISAT and the Tata Cornell Institute (TCI) , stressed the importance of making millets a permanent part of the PDS to improve food security and nutrition. They pointed out that millets' potential in the PDS has not been fully tapped. At the event held at ICRISAT’s Hyderabad campus, Dr. Prabhu Pingali, Chair of the ICRISAT Board and Director of TCI, said that the expert discussions would help shape a more effective and future-ready PDS system in India. "Millets have the potential to transform our food systems, but this can only happen if we bring together policy, science, and action. To make this happen, TCI is working with its partners to understand the 'true cost of the PDS'—looking at its environmental, economic, and nutritional impacts and finding areas for improvement. For example, by helping states source locally grown millets through ICRISAT’s efforts...

Millets: A Nutrient-Rich Solution for Food Security in the Himalayan Foothills

Researchers are spotlighting millet as a highly nutritious, climate-resilient crop that could help tackle food insecurity in the Himalayan foothills. More nutritious than rice and wheat, millet thrives in marginal conditions but its consumption is declining due to low awareness and changing diets. A study in  Scientific Reports  examined how fertilizer use, cultivated land, and rural populations affect millet production in Nepal. While climate change has little impact on millet yields, awareness is low, and millet’s role in diets is shrinking. With 820 million people facing chronic hunger globally, the study stresses the importance of increasing agricultural productivity and diversifying crops. Millets, which grow well in harsh conditions, offer food security and economic stability, especially in low-income, mountainous regions. They also contribute to sustainable agriculture in Asia and Africa. To boost millet use, the authors recommend government subsidies, agricultur...

Millet Farming Gains Momentum in South India: A Path to Prosperity

A recent study by the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) has found that the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala are becoming major centers for growing millets in India. The study shows that these regions have adopted modern farming techniques to improve millet cultivation. This includes better seeds, the use of machinery, and stronger marketing strategies. With these changes, along with better infrastructure, millet farming has expanded in these areas. The report, titled  "Strengthening the Small Grains Economy: Lessons from the South Indian Study,"  was written by botanist Aliworking, economist Madhura Swaminathan, MSSRF scientist P. Yuvaraj, and nutritionist DJ Nithila. It is part of the International Year of Millets 2023, which highlights how millets can help improve food security and boost the economy. Millet Farming and Economic Impact India produces over 200 million tonnes of food grains each year, but millets ac...
